Our Speeds came to Iowa (as did nearly 200,000 others) in 1854 - 1855. People were flooding to Iowa in this period from all the other well established areas of the country. Just what mode of transportation was used is not known, but people came by wagons, boats, and trains. The Iowa City Reporter stated that it estimated over 8,700 people in covered wagons passed through Illinois in one month alone and by one route only. Add to this the Chicago Press reporting over 12,000 people arriving in Iowa by train in the span of just six days. And boat traffic past St. Louis in one day was estimated at 600 people.
