Birth Notes for Child: Joseph Mccarty Ewing

His death certificate indicates he died Oct 26 1905 age 62 years 10 months 7days - this would put his birth date as Dec 19 1842, however, the same document says that his birth date is Dec 9 1841. His obituary says Dec 9 1842. His military records says he was 18 in 1861(birth year would be 1843). Jan Wearda (a direct descendent from this family) list his birth date as Dec 9 1844 and also indicates recollections from 2 of the children of this family.

General Notes for Child Joseph Mccarty Ewing

Was an employee of the "shops" (presumably the Chicago Great Western Railroad)
========================
From Jan Wearda
Joseph McCarty Ewing came to America (1853) when he was about 8 or 9 years old, settling in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He was between 14 or 15 years old when he came to Clayton County, Iowa. When was he born? Janice Wearda has several different times--death certificate, two children's written report, plus his Civil War papers and they do not agree.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Joseph McCarty was in the Civil War. He was in the NINTH INFANTRY, Company E as a drummer boy.
He joined it September 9, 1861 (Vogla, IA) and was mustered out 18 July 1865 and had a fever sore because of the war. His honorable discharge was from Louisville, KY.
Copied from the "Roster of Iowa Soldiers the Regis. Infantry", page 48, (507.3 I 64 c.3) EWING, JOSEPH, age 18, Residence Volga City, nativity Scotland. Enlisted Sept. 9, 1861, Mustered Sept. 24,1861. Mustered out July 18, 1865, Louisville, Ky.

At the time when Vera, his daughter, was born, his occupation was "Baggage man" I would assume this was with the RR. This was on Vera's birth certificate.

Ewing Family Research
Undertaken by Val Wilson

Research Summary
The information provided was that Robert Ewing was born in Scotland about 1800. He married Mary Williamson in "Cummocle, Murkirk", Ayrshire in 1820. They had six children born in Scotland and then moved to the US in about 1852.
The brief was to confirm the known information and to try to find out any further information on the Ewing family from the Scottish records. In particular, it was to try to find Robert and Mary's parents.
I have confirmed most of the information from the brief, but with a couple of minor changes. I have also found four more children born to Robert and Mary, and found that both Robert and Mary were born in Ireland, not Scotland. I have also found when the family arrived in the US.

Research Detail
The first thing I did was to check the information provided in the brief, namely the marriage of Robert Ewing and the births of their six children. I found that the information more or less matched that given in the Old Parochial Registers (OPRs). I believe someone had extracted the information from these OPRs, but had made one or two minor mistakes with the place names.
The first thing to point out is that Robert and Mary's marriage and the births of their first children were all recorded in the Muirkirk (not Murkirk) OPR.
The marriage details are as follows:-

OPR for Muirkirk, Ref 607/3, Frame 811
1820. Robert Ewings and Mary Williamson both belonging to this Parish were regularly proclaimed in this parish church in order to Marriage and Married at Cumnock on the 29 November.

Although both Robert and Mary were parishioners of Muirkirk, they were actually married at Cumnock (not Cummocle) which is a town in the parish of Old Cumnock which lies to the south of Muirkirk. Muirkirk is to the east of central Ayrshire, bordering Lanarkshire.
The births of the first four children were all recorded in the Muirkirk OPR as follows:-

OPR for Muirkirk, Ref 607/3, Frame 662
1822. Robert Ewings & Mary Williamson Negslee a daughter born 24th March and baptized on the 31st named Anne.

OPR for Muirkirk, Ref 607/3, Frame 671
1824. Robert Ewings and Mary Williamson Kirkgreen a son born 3rd April & baptized the 6th named William.

OPR for Muirkirk, Ref 607/3, Frame 679
1826. Robert Ewings & Mary Williamson Burnside a son born 23rd April & baptized in the Church the 21st Mary name Matthew.

OPR for Muirkirk, Ref 607/3, Frame 691
1828. Robert Ewings and Mary Williamson Burnside a son born 9th September and baptized named Robert.

These all match the information given in the brief except that the family were at Kirkgreen, not Kirkgriero, when William was born in 1824.
Some time between 1828 and 1830, the family moved to Dailly parish, which is in the south west of Ayrshire. There were two births recorded in the Dailly OPR:-

OPR for Dailly, Ref 585/2, Frame 524
1830. Samuel son lawful to Robert Ewin by Mary Williamson his wife was born Sept 10th and Baptized Octr 7th.

OPR for Dailly, Ref 585/2, Frame 534
1835. John son lawful to Robert Ewin by Mary Williamson was born Febry 17th and Baptized March 24th.

Note that their surname was written as "Ewings" in the Muirkirk OPR and as "Ewin" in the Dailly OPR. It is probably the case that Robert could not read or write and the spelling of the surname was down to the session clerk who entered it in the OPR.
The brief mentioned that Robert and Mary were born in Scotland. To get an idea of their ages and where they were born, I tried to find them in the 1851 census for Ayrshire. There is a surname index for the whole county of Ayrshire for the 1851 census, but there was no sign of Robert and his family anywhere in the county.
I then checked the 1841 census for Dailly. There is no index to this, but Dailly was not a very large parish, so I read through the whole census and found the family. Note that much less information was given in the 1841 census, but the details are:-

Census Year 1841, Parish Dailly, Reference 585, Enum Book 6, Page 7
Address - Kilgrammie
Name Age Occupation Born in County?
Robert Ewens 35 Coal M Ireland
Mary Ewens 35 Ireland
Ann Ewens 15 Ireland
Matthew Ewens 15 Coal M. Yes
Robert Ewens 12 Coal M. Yes
Samuel Ewens 10 Coal M. Yes
Susan Ewens 5 Yes
Wm. Ewens 3 Yes
James Ewens 1 Yes
Ann Williamson 70 Ind. Ireland

This was very useful since it tells us that Robert and Mary were born in Ireland. Ages were rounded to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census, so we know that born Robert and Mary were born in approximately 1806. Note that Ann's birthplace was also given as Ireland, but we know that she was born in Muirkirk.
We also have three other children - Susan, born in about 1836, William in about 1838 and James in about 1840. I assume that the William who was born in 1824 had died as a young child. There was no sign of John, who would be aged 6.
Note also that the Ann Williamson who was living with the family was presumably Mary's mother.
Although I could not find the Ewing family in Ayrshire in 1851, there is also a census index for most of Lanarkshire and I also checked this. I found the Ewing family living in Bothwell. I did not have time to check the full entry, but the information from the index is as follows:-

Census Year 1851, Parish Bothwell, Reference 625, Enum Book 13, Page 7
Name Age Birthplace
Robert Ewing 52 Ireland
Mary Ewing 47 Ireland
Robert Ewing 21 Ayrshire, Muirkirk
Samuel Ewing 19 Ayrshire, Dailly
John Ewing 15 Ayrshire, Dailly
William Ewing 12 Ayrshire, Dailly
James Ewing 10 Ayrshire, Dailly
Joseph Ewing 7 Ayrshire, Dailly

There was also a Mathew Ewing, age 25 and born in Muirkirk with, presumably, his wife Janet, aged 24 living close by (Ref 625, Book 13, Page 8). There was no sign of Anne, Susan or Robert Junior, but we now know of another child - Joseph.
So, to summarise, we have the following children and their approximate or actual birth dates:-

Name Date of Birth Parish of Birth
Anne 24 Mar 1822 Muirkirk
William1 3 Apr 1824 Muirkirk
Mathew 23 Apr 1826 Muirkirk
Robert 9 Sep 1828 Muirkirk
Samuel 10 Sep 1830 Dailly
John 17 Feb 1835 Dailly
Susan 1836 Dailly
William2 1838 Dailly
James 1840 Dailly
Joseph 1843 Dailly

I looked at the passenger lists available online and found that a Mathew Ewing aged 26, Robert aged 23 and Samuel aged 20 all arrived in the US on the 7th June 1852 aboard the Cora Linn from Glasgow. There was also a Janet Ewing aged 25 on the same ship. Although I cannot be certain, it seems likely that these were Robert and Mary's three sons and Mathew's wife Janet.
I believe the rest of the family arrived on the William Rathbone from Liverpool on 15th April 1853. On board there was a Robert Ewing aged 59, Maria Ewing aged 49, Susan Ewing aged 16, John Ewing aged 14, William Ewing aged 12, James Ewing aged 10 and Joseph Ewing aged 8. Other than the slight discrepancy in ages it seems extremely unlikely that there could be another Ewing family that matched so closely and I believe this is our family. The only child not accounted for is Anne. It is possible she left at a different time, or she could have married and remained here in Scotland.
