General Notes for Child Dr. Asa W Chamberlin
From the Biographical Record of Hamilton County 1902
A.W. CHAMBERLIN, M. D.
Long has Dr. Chamberlin engaged in the practice of medicine, and his great skill in his chosen calling has won for him a large patronage. He has also been closely connected with business interests in this part of Iowa as one of the promoters of the telephone system. He was born in Scioto county, Ohio, in 1854, a son of Oliver and Clarissa (Baccus) Chamberlin, who were natives of Ohio and were married in that state. The father was a miller by trade and upon his removal to Iowa turned his attention to farming, locating in Cambridge, Story county, this state, in 1856. Both he and his wife have now passed away; the former in 1892; the latter in 1884.
The Doctor was but two years of age when brought to Iowa by his parents and under the parental roof in Story county he was reared to the public school system of that locality he is indebted for the early educational privileges which he enjoyed. In the school year of 1872-3 he was a student in Ames. Iowa, pursuing a regular course in the State Agriculural College. He then took up the study of medicine under the direction of Dr. D. D. Hays, of Cambridge, who directed his reading for two years, during which time he also attended a course of lectures at Keokuk, Iowa, and subsequently was graduated from the Louisville Medical College, of Louisville, Kentucky, with the class of 1876.
The Doctor then began practice in Elkhart, Polk county, Iowa, and in 1877 made his way to Hook's Point, an inland hamlet, where he remained for two years. For one year he was located at Lake Center, in Clear Lake township, and in 1881 he came to Stratford, his house being the first one built in the town, and here he has continued to practice with good success and is the recognized head of the medical fraternity in this part of the county. Many other physicians have come and gone, but Dr. Chamberlin has remained here, enjoying a liberal patronage. He is now examining physician for a number of insurance companies, and is the loved family physician of many a household where his labors have been continued in times of illness through a long period. The Doctor has been a wide and close reader of everything bearing on the science of medicine, or which tends to bring to the profession the key to that mystery which we call life. He is quick to adopt new ideas and methods which he believes will prove of practical benefit to life and human suffering, and that his labors have been attended with satisfactory success is indicated by the large member of people who are his patrons.
In 1898 Dr. Chamberlin became connected with the telephone extension. He constructed the telephone lines from Stratford southeast to Clear Lake township and on to Stanhope. This is a famers' line and was probably the first ever constructed in Iowa. A year later, in company with four others. Dr. Chamberlin organized a company which was incorporated and which has done an extensive business in constructing lines since that time for a local company. The contract covers about one hundred and fifty miles and the Doctor is president of the company. They have over two hundred telephone subscribers and connection is furnished with other lines. This has been of great benefit to the farming people and Dr. Chamberlin deserves great credit for promoting such an important and valuable enterprise. In 1897-8 he was located in Cheyenne county, Kansas, but returned and has since been a resident of Stratford, where he owns residence property and a good office on Main street. In August 1901, he became associated with Dr. H. K. McCall, of Fort Dodge, and this relation has since been maintained.
In 1878 Dr. Chamberlin was united in marriage, at Strawberry Point, Clayton county, Iowa, to Miss Susan A. Speed, who was born near Dubuque, Iowa, and they have three children: Edward, who is engaged on the telephone construction: Winnie, the wife of Thomas Hokes, of Stratford: and Clara, who is yet under the parental roof. In his political views the Doctor is a Republican and has served for six years as a member of the town council of Stratford, putting forth every effort in his power to promote the general good through his official prerogatives. He is widely and favorably known and his efforts in behalf of the town have not been without beneficial results.
