William Struthers Templeton died of an accidental death. He owned a woolen mill and possibly a silk mill. The family manufactured Coronation Carpets employing over 100 weavers using cotton and wool.

Margaret Templeton was the daughter of a silk and woolen manufacturer in Ayr, Scotland. (The village is famous as the birthplace of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.) The family was prosperous, servants did the work and Margaret knew little about labor. It was customary in Scotland for the wealth of the family to be handed down to the eldest son, but Margaret's father did not think that fair and just to the rest of his children so he gave each child $1000.00 and the remainder of his estate was passed on down to the eldest son James Templeton.
