------------------------------------------
In 1880 Martin sold land to William S. and James H. Smyth e and then purchased 80 acres on the north half of the nort heast quarter of Section 14, Township 90, Range 45 in Plymo uth Co IA from John Redfern. (Plymouth Co IA Record Book I pgs 359 & 361)

General Notes (Wife)
In 1853 her family moved to Aurora IL and a short time later to Dubuque Co IA. (Taken from a newspaper article of William and Mary Jane Peron's 50th wedding anniversary.)
-------------------------------------------------
After Martins' death she moved with her children to Kansas traveling in covered wagons through Indian Territory. They were followed by hostile Indians, however they reached their destination of Oberlin, Kansas safely.
At one time families could travel without fear of Indian attacks and were able to obtain food and shelter from them . It wasn't until this trip that she realized that the once friendly Indians had turned hostile. ("The Harrisons...the Bridge Over Time", a history by Justin Herbst.)
She purchased a home in the Summit Addition to the city of Oberlin, Kansas: Lot 11, Block 16, on 21 April 1900 for the sum of $375.00. (1900 Decatur Co KS Census, Oberlin Township).
---------------------------------------------------
The last 15 months of her life she suffered with cancer and her last days were spent at the home of her daughter Hattie. She died just weeks after her grandson Ira. Services were held in the Vallonia Schoolhouse. There has been no record found of her buriel in Oberlin or in the Vallonia Cemetery. We believe that she must have been buried next to her grandson, Ira who is buried at the Vallonia Cemetery in Olive Township.
An affidavit of Death from the State of Kansas states that her estate was worth about $1,000.00. (Probate Record found at Plymouth Co IA Courthouse, Book 5, pg 273.)
Notes (Marriage)
Married by Alonzo McKee J.P.
The following information was received from Sandi Franklin:
Marriage Record Book 2, pg 9, Dubuque Co IA.
Martin and Maria Peron Speed
Martin Speed was born on May 31, 1833 in Columbia County, New York. (Source: Family Bible) He was one of several children born to Richard and Mary (Smith) Speed. In approximately 1855, he moved with his parents to Dubuque County, Iowa. (Source: 1856 Clayton County Iowa Census, Page 122) It was there that he met and married Maria Peron on February 3, 1858. (Source: Marriage record from Dubuque Co IA, Record Book 2, pages 9)
Maria was born October 30, 1841, in Columbia County, New York to Deidrich and Regina (Heinrich) Peron. She was one of at least seven children who moved with their parents to Aurora, Illinois in 1853 and then on to Dubuque County, Iowa a short time later. (Source: Newspaper article of William and Mary Jane Peron'' 50th anniversary.)
Martin and Maria were living in Honey Creek Township, Delaware County, Iowa during the census of 1860. He worked as a laborer and had personal property of $45.00. (Source: 1860 Delaware Co IA Census, Honey Creek Township, page 362.)
They were parents of three children: Elvira, Sylvanus J., and Hattie R. Elvira was born April 13, 1859 and died at the age of 10. (Note by Jean: Uncertain if name is Elvira or Elvina. It is not known where she died or of what cause.)
It was during the spring of 1870 that they decided to move to Plymouth County Iowa. They homesteaded 80 acres on the south half of the southeast quarter in Section 24, Township 90, Range 45. (Source: Land Record, Book J, page 45.) Martin was farming there and had personal property in the amount of $300 at the time of the 1870 Iowa Census. Their daughter, Hattie, married John Lewis Franklin on February 14, 1878 and resided nearby.
Martin sold the land in May of 1880 to William S. and James H. Smythe (Source: Plymouth Co IA Land Record, Book I, page 359.) and immediately purchased 80 acres on the north half of the northeast quarter of Section 14, Township 90, Range 45 in Plymouth County from John Redfern. (Source: Plymouth Co IA Land Record, Book I, page 361.) They lived there with their son, Sylvanus, and a little 7-year-old boy named Oley Wall at the time of the 1880 Census.
In 1892, they retired to the town of Kingsley (Garfield Township, Plymouth County, Iowa) where they were members of the United Brethren Church. Martin purchased a home on Lot 31 in Block 2 for the amount of $400 in August of 1892. In February of 1896, Martin sold the home to Maria for $300. The 1895 Iowa Census confirms Martin and Maria's residence.
Martin Speed died June 13, 1899 at his home in Kingsley. (Source: Death Certificate, Plymouth Co IA, Book 1, page 138.) His obituary is even specific with the time of death…5:15 a.m. It also says that he had one sister. I believe this is Jane Little of Strawberry Point, Iowa where Maria and Martin visited periodically. Martin is buried in the Lincoln Township Cemetery, Plymouth County, Iowa. In checking the undertaker records at Clarke's Hardware in Kingsley, we found the following record on page 119 (June 14, 1899) - Casket and hearse for M. Speed $32.50 (paid in cash). As we were looking through the records, we found that using a coffin room would cost $18.00 at that time.
When her children decided to move to Kansas late in 1899, Maria packed up her belongings and went along. The families traveled in covered wagons through Indian territory. Since the Indians were very hostile and followed them, the families were very relieved to get to their destination…Oberlin, Kansas. Maria told her grandchildren how things had changed from her pioneering days as a child. She remembered that the families could stop and get food and shelter with the Indians, but it was not until this trip that she saw how badly the once friendly Indians had been treated over the years. (Source: "The Harrisons…the Bridge Over Time" by Justin Herbst.)
Maria purchased a hoe in the Summit Addition to the city of Oberlin, Kansas (Lot 11, Block 16) on April 21, 1900 for the sum of $375.00. The 1900 Decatur County, Kansas census shows Maria residing in Oberlin Township.
She suffered from cancer the last 15 months of her life and her last days were spent at the home of her daughter, Hattie. She died September 27, 1901, just weeks after her grandson, Ira, died. Services were held at the Vallonia Schoolhouse. No record can be found of her being buried in the Oberlin or in the Vallonia Cemetery. We feel that she must have been buried next to her grandson, Ira, who was buried at the Vallonia Cemetery in Olive Township. (When John "Darrell" and Lois Franklin visited Oberlin in 1989, they placed a marker for Maria next to Ira's.) An affidavit of Death from the State of Kansas states that Maria's estate was worth about $1,000.
Martin and Maria were true pioneers. Their children returned to Iowa shortly after Maria's death with Sylvanus eventually settling with his family in Minnesota and Hattie and her family homesteading in Saskatchewan, Canada.
=========================================================
General Notes for Child Sylvanus J. Speed
He returned to IA from KS shortly after his mother's death. Eventually he settled in MN.
General Notes for Child Hattie Regina Speed
She and her family homesteaded in Saskatchewan Canada after her mother's death in 1901.
She was treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN in 1920 & 1921 for Hyperthyroidism. Initially treated with injections and then the thyroid was partially removed in February of 1921. She was not seen at the Mayo Clinic after that time. (Letter from Mayo Clinic to Jean Franklin Hoyt)
She was never well during the remaining years of her life . It is suspected that she died from cancer.
She died in the Regina General Hospital 13 days after the death of her son, John Martin. She was never told of his death.

General Notes (Wife)
Family Story: (contributed by Lillian Brown)
Eliza is my grandfather's grandmother. When grandpa announced his
intention to marry grandma the summer of 1913, Eliza invited her to spend a week at
her home on Mt. Riga. Eliza pulled out every quilt, blanket, curtain, etc. and had
my grandmother wash everything by hand in the brook near the house. She wanted to
be sure grandma would be a good and capable wife for her "Willy" and spent the week
testing grandma. Apparently grandma passed muster. My grandparents were married on
Christmas Day, 1913 at St. Mary's RC Church in Lakeville.
