JAMES TEMPLETON DEMPSTER 1839-1907
Our friend Jim Dempster died at his home quite suddenly last Sunday afternoon. His death was not unexpected. He was known to have a very severe case of heart trouble and the physicians warned his family that death was liable to take place any moment. He had been up walking around the house and sat down on the edge of the bed when the summons came and he was gone. He was an old resident of these parts and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a frequent caller at this office and we always enjoyed a talk with him. Rev. Dwello, of the Methodist church conducted the services at the residence yesterday which were largely attended. The Woodmen, of which order he was a member, attending.
The following is the obituary.
James T. Dempster was born in Ayershire Scotland, June 30, 1839, and died at his home near Arlington June 23rd, 1907, aged 67 years, 11 months and 23 days. At the age of two years he came to America with his parents and located at Ypsilanti, Mich. In 1852 they came to Fayette county and located in this community where he has resided all these years.
On Sept. 22, 1861, he was married to Miss Jane Duff of Taylorsville. There were born to this union nine children, six of whom, with his wife, survive to mourn his loss, the children living are Mrs. Marion Watts of Marathon, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Speed of Oelwein, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Fox, William J. Dempster, Mrs. Lovina Squires, and David Dempster all of Arlington. There are also twenty-four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Four sisters and two brothers survive him with his mother who is ninety-six years of age and resides in Springfield, S. D.
Mr. Dempster died just six months from the day he was taken to his bed. During these months he has suffered from heart trouble and other complications. At the time of his departing there seemed to be some indications of temporary improvement in his condition and he was remarking to some of his family how well he felt, when he was gone.
Mr. Dempster was a man of sterling business integrity and commanded the confidence and respect of the community. Coming here in an early day he experienced the hardships of pioneer life, and has witnessed the transformation of this country from a wilderness to a prosperous agricultural community.
Funeral services were conducted at the home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. by Rev. P.M. Dwello of the Methodist church. The interment was at Taylorsville cemetery. The services after the sermon were in charge of the order of Modern Woodmen, of which there was a large attendance. There were numerous beautiful floral offerings.

JOHN DEMPSTER (1802-1884)
John Dempster was born in Edinburgh Castle while his father was a soldier serving in Ireland in the war between the Protestants and Catholics.
The members of the family were weavers by trade and John was reared to that occupation. He also led the life of a shepherd upon the hills of Scotland and could shear seventy sheep per day and weave forty yards of cloth. It was reported that as a shepherd John would take a whistle, dog, a ladder, some yarn and knitting needles with his sheep and would go far up the mountainsides. After he would reach a favorable feeding place for the sheep he would adjust the ladder, which had a bag like seat or pouch, which was used to carry the knitting while on the way up the mountain. From the top of the ladder he could sit comfortably and knit and at the same time tend his flock. Years later John taught all his children to hook rugs, knit mittens, scarves and stockings. Many times there were terrible storms in the mountains and the streams in the valley were so swollen that John would keep the sheep on the mountain sides rather than risk crossing the river.
His educational advantages were limited and when he was permitted to attend school he had to walk a distance of six miles.

Margaret Templeton was the daughter of a silk and woolen manufacturer in Ayr, Scotland. (The village is famous as the birthplace of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.) The family was prosperous, servants did the work and Margaret knew little about labor. It was customary in Scotland for the wealth of the family to be handed down to the eldest son, but Margaret's father did not think that fair and just to the rest of his children so he gave each child $1000.00 and the remainder of his estate was passed on down to the eldest son James Templeton.

m. 26 Jun 1829
b. 06 Apr 1802 b. 25 Aug 1810
d. 21 Jul 1884 d. 31 Dec 1907
On the 26th of June, 1829, in the Parish of Dalrymple, Ayrshire, Scotland, John Dempster was united in marriage with Margaret Templeton, the Rev. Robert Wallace officiating.
They spent 12 years in Scotland and on the 10th of August 1841, with their five children (William 10+, Margaret 8-1-, Thomas 6+, Annaple 4+, and James 2+ years) they started for America. After a safe six weeks ocean voyage they became residents of Ypsilanti, Wayne County, Mien. John, their sixth child was born Oct. 6, 1841, just six weeks after their arrival in America.
Mary Templeton Campbell, sister of Margaret had moved near Otisville (Wayne Co.) Michigan and Margaret and John decided to move to Otisville to the Campbells. Mary, Margaret, and John purchased timber land near Ypsilanti for their home but soon discovered that timber was of very little value so this was cut down and burned to provide ground space to raise potatoes, etc. Through poverty and lack of money to buy other clothing, many days Margaret helped in the woods dressed in silk furnished her from her father's mill. John turned to weaving. On leaving the fields in the evening, he would return home and take his place at the loom where in his spare time he wove twenty-two hundred yards of cloth. For additional income the rest of the family made sugar, while he wove. By this time the family had 10 children.
Selling out in 1852, the family moved to Iowa, traveling by ox-team. Thirteen of them crossed the Mississippi in a little skiff with the water only one inch from the top of the boat. As they reached Dubuque a friendly family cared for Margaret and her 3-week-old child Lavinia for the night. (Lavinia was born August 1, 1852. If they were in Dubuque when she was three weeks old they probably arrived at Taylorsville in early September.) They spent the winter with the George Munger family ...Their daughter Margaret had married George Munger who had five children by a previous marriage. They lived at Taylorsville at that time. John and Margaret brought their family and lived with Margaret and George Munger and family through the winter.
In the spring they purchased eighty acres of wild land. 'No fence was around it, not a furrow had been turned or an improvement made.' Twins were born to them in 1855, Susanna and Luanna, and in 1858 a son David was born. The twins died at 3 years of age; Luanna in April and Susanna in May from Scarlet Fever. Lavina's death was said to have been caused from sitting on the damp ground and it resulted in a quick T.B.' David, the youngest, died when a young man of 23. Another son Thomas, born in Scotland about 1834, died in 1843 when they were living in Michigan.
For thirty years John and Margaret lived on the homestead, transforming it into a rich and productive farm and then sold out, going to live with their son John. There he spent his last days, dying July 2, 1884, at the age of eighty-two years and three months. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a good citizen - a Republican in politics and a successful and just businessman.
Margaret continued to live with son John who eventually homesteaded near Springfield, South Dakota, where she died Dec. 31,1907 aged 97 years 4 months and 6 days.
Margaret and John are buried in Taylorsville Cemetery.

General Notes (Wife)
Eliza Hummel was quite a remarkable person. She gave birth to the first of eleven children when she was not yet 18 and the last when she was in her 41st year. She was a tiny woman, not five feet tall, although she was well into her 80's by the time I can remember her. (from the records of one of Eliza's grandsons). 34
